The Dust Busters are heading out on tour again, this time to the great states of Ohio and Kentucky! We will be on tour from Nov. 15th - Nov. 20th, all the dates are below. We are pleased and honored to be performing at To Sing With You Once More: A musical memorial benefiting the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation and the Mike Seeger Scholarship Fund. This concert was organized my Michael Oberst of The Tillers, one of our very favorite bands! It is a tribute to the music and work of Mike Seeger.

About The show and Occupy Movement...

The money from the door will go to buying sleeping pads, coats, blankets and flowers for wall st. This event (like OWS) has no political affiliations. It is simply a way to bring the community together in celebration and support of those putting their lives on the line to remind the goverment that its job is to execute the will of the PEOPLE, not CORPORATIONS!

As a movement, we are not anti-capitalist or anti-business, we just care about each other and recognize that corporations are responsible to their shareholders. It is the responsibility of the people to establish rules and a method of enforcing them that enables society to function fairly. When this process breaks down we must say something, and loudly. Money speaks very convincingly. People are much less likely to listen to dirty freaks with funny signs, so we the artists must help them.

Everyone decries the citizens and officers of Nazi Germany for not saying something, and yet a group of modern transnational corporations are waging a war on the entire earth, on human rights, and on the whole principle of dignity and integrity which is far more insidious and pervasive.

Many of us feel we can't leave our jobs or careers or families to make our voices heard, even though we recognize that the electoral process will never bring about major change in the values and efficacy of our goverment. Let's come together and support those who are. Sleeping on concrete in the freezing weather is very bad on your back and if the camp has any chance of not succombing to infectious disease they will need to all be dressed warmly; both those who are there for free food and those who left good jobs to come and sweep our city or provide legal or medical aid to the community- not because they're being paid to but because they care.

I was lucky enough recently to be interviewed by Jon Gerberg for the program “Caught in the Act” on Brooklyn Independent Television, and here is the result! Thanks Jon!
I talk about what I do here in Brooklyn with my old time string band The Dust Busters, with Down Home Radio and with the upcoming Brooklyn Folk Festival, scheduled to take place June 10th – 12th of this year. Its right around the corner!

Goin' to South by Southwest with Peter Stampfel

Well here we are again, The Dust Busters, just back from a successful tour of the Pacific Northwest! But we're not done yet! We're heading down to Austin, TX to play at South by Southwest, the huge annual music and film festival they have there. Gonna be fun! We'll be playing together with our good friend Peter Stampfel of The Holy Modal Rounders. Peter Stampfel + The Dust Busters (with a few other friends thrown in, including John Cohen) = The Ether Frolic Mob. We often play around New York as Ether Frolic and it'll be fun taking the show on the road.

We'll be out and around town busking and raising a ruckus on Friday the 18th. Then catch us at our showcase concert at Creekside at the Hilton Garden Inn, Sat. March 19th 1AM- 1:50AM (which is the 20th by then).

We are very very pleased to be doing a tour of the West Coast with our friend from New Lost City, John Cohen. John Cohen is a founder of the legendary old-time string band The New Lost City Ramblers, one of our very favorite bands and big inspirations. John Cohen is a musician, photographer and film maker who has released more than 16 documentary films. His latest is entitled "Roscoe Holcomb: From Daisy, Kentucky." The film follows Roscoe Holcomb, the singer, banjo and guitar player, construction worker and coal miner whom John encountered in 1959 while doing field work in Eastern Kentucky. John befriended Roscoe and through John, Roscoe Holcomb was able to tour and play shows around the United States and in Europe, becoming known as one of the truly unique and essential voices of American folk music. It’s a beautiful film and a wonderful tribute to Roscoe Holcomb.

“Roscoe Holcomb: From Daisy, Kentucky” recently premiered at the Margaret Meade Film Festival at the American Museum of Natural History together with a retrospective of John’s work and also just won the award for Best Documentary Short at the Woodstock Film Festival.

Also, a very nice piece about John Cohen and the new film just aired on NPR’s Weekend Edition: CHECK IT OUT!

Here’s a synopsis of “Roscoe Holcomb: From Daisy, Kentucky" that I wrote for the program guide of the Woodstock Film Festival:

“John Cohen explores the life, philosophy and music of Eastern Kentucky banjo player, coal miner and construction worker Roscoe Holcomb. Holcomb has been injured on the job and forced into early retirement. He discusses his life and music and plays a number of traditional songs from his region. Using intimate footage of Holcomb at home as well as footage of his family, community and region, Cohen presents a remarkable and visually beautiful portrait of Roscoe Holcomb, a man who despite economic hardship and changing times has maintained a powerful and authentic personal music and philosophy.”

All shows feature The Dust Busters with John Cohen unless otherwise noted. Frank Fairfield will join the band for the show at The Freight and Salvage in Berkeley!

We had a really great time! Here we are on stage with Patti and her band, sitting in with them for the finale as the clock struck midnight and we started the year 2011. Happy New Year!

Hello everybody-

Our brand new EP, "Prohibition is a Failure" is coming out on Sunday Dec. 12th, and we're proud as can be! We'll be doing a CD release show that night at Southpaw here in Brooklyn. Its gonna be a great show with a number of our favorite musicians joining us on the bill. We recorded the album over the summer with John Cohen, a founder of The New Lost City Ramblers, one of our all time favorite bands and it was a huge honor as well as a pleasure to make a record with him. This EP will be followed by a full length LP with more recordings from those sessions a few months down the road. The album will be available for purchase on the internet soon enough... but come down to the show and get one hot of the press!

We've been doing a whole lot of work with John Cohen of late including recording an album with him over the Summer which came out real nice- and we're releasing an EP from those sessions real soon! "Gone to the Country: The New Lost City Ramblers and the Folk Music Revival," is a new book by Ray Allen that chronicles the life and music of the New Lost City Ramblers, a trio of city-bred musicians who helped pioneer the resurgence of southern roots music during the folk revival of the late 1950s and 1960s. Formed in 1958 by Mike Seeger, John Cohen, and Tom Paley, the Ramblers introduced the regional styles of southern ballads, blues, string bands, and bluegrass to northerners yearning for a sound and an experience not found in mainstream music. Tonight, Ray Allen will show rare and fantastic photos of the band, while telling the story of the band and it's impact on music everywhere.

REVIVAL at 25CPW showcases not just the music but the creative hunger, unique vision, and artistic discipline of three important pioneers of the 1950’s old-time stringband revival.

The folk music revival that emerged from the creative ferment around Washington Square Park in the ‘50's signified a yearning within the newly industrialized society for a connection to a more traditional, handmade America.

One vibrant branch of this movement was composed of individuals who developed a profound reverence for the rich stringband traditions of the rural South. The New Lost City Ramblers became the trailblazers of this new subculture, not only through faithful study and performance of the music, but also as a result of the extensive field recordings they made as they sought out living exemplars throughout the mountains of Appalachia.

New, young bands quickly followed suit. A ragtag group of street performers from Berkeley, California formed the Highwoods Stringband and introduced the music to eager new ears across the country. They settled outside of Ithaca, NY which became a hot point in the new old-time music scene. Also in Ithaca, the Correctone Stringband was led by fiddler John Specker, whose explosive channeling of the Muse spawned a regional style that became known at fiddlers' conventions as the 'Ithaca sound'.

Today the old-time stringband revival remains a strong and vital movement. New generations continue to discover within these old fiddle tunes not antiquated relics but a unique and living form of American music.

A Visit with Joe Thompson

On a beautiful day in early June The Dust Busters paid a visit to the home of Joe and Polly Thompson. Joe Thompson is 91 and lives outside of Mebane, NC. He has been playing fiddle since he was 5 years old, way back in 1923 and is perhaps the very last traditionally schooled African-American fiddler in the world. Joe is a World War II veteran and is long retired from his job at a furniture factory. He continues to play music at home and at gigs including taking his music to Carnegie Hall in New York City, the National Folk Festival and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and the International Music Festival in Brisbane, Australia. In 2007 Joe Thompson was honored with the National Heritage Fellowship award from National Endowment for the Arts. The Carolina Chocolate Drops have spent a lot of time with Joe and have learned a lot from him. They continue to present many of his tunes in their performances. We met Joe at the 2nd Black Banjo Gathering, held in Boone, NC in March of this year.

We sat around the Thompson's picnic table in the field behind their house and played a number of tunes as Joe recalled his musical family and his upbringing. Joe and Polly were tremendously nice and hospitable and we were really touched and honored to spend time with them. Here are some excerpts from the long afternoon that we spent at the Thompson's home.

Big thanks go to Joe and Polly's friend Larry Vellani for bringing us to their home that day, and a shout out goes to our friend Steve Kruger who joined us with his banjo and guitar.

Roscoe Holcomb at the Woodstock Film Festival

We were very pleased to play with John Cohen on Saturday following the screening of his new film, "Roscoe Holcomb: From Daisy Kentucky" at the 2010 Woodstock Film Festival. We were even more pleased that the film took the award for best short documentary at the festival!

Look out for John & The Dust Busters playing in support of the film again on Nov. 13th at the 34th Annual Margaret Mead Film & Video Festival at the American Museum of Natural History.

The Dust Busters self titled first album has just been reviewed in the Summer 2010 issue of Sing Out! magazine. The very positive review says that we "embrace happy recklessness." The reviewer goes on to say that, "I wish they could have put this record out on 78rpm; I'd love to play it on my grandmother's Victrola. Authentically good stuff!"

We would like to start issuing 78rpm singles. Sounds expensive. Who knows, we'll work on it...

Dock Boggs Festival

The Dust Busters are on our way to Norton, Virginia today, once home of legendary banjo player Dock Boggs and current home of the Dock Boggs Festival. We will be playing there on Saturday Sept. 11th at 3pm. At 5pm our friends The Tillers will also play. Gonna be a great festival, check it out!

DOCK BOGGS
The festival honors Moran Lee "Dock" Boggs, a Norton native who recorded traditional mountain songs, including his unique style of banjo plucking in a 1920 recording session in New York. Boggs, who died in 1971, received more fame when folk musician Mike Seeger came to Norton to record the retired coal miner's music in the 1960's. Boggs is also credited with influencing musician Bob Dylan and others. Seeger brought Boggs's music to the national stage once again in 1997 when he released some of the Norton native's recordings.

KATE PETERS STURGILL

Kate is a native ballad singer and songwriter; she is also honored by the festival because of her lifelong work with traditional mountain music. She is noted for helping A. P. Carter collect traditional mountain music. Sturgill and her band, "The Lonesome Pine Trailers," performed in Norton radio station, WNVA.

This is Frank's first ever appearance in New York! Frank is a top notch fiddler, banjo player and guitarist and a great great singer. He's one of the best traditional old-time musicians in the country today and a Dust Buster favorite. Check him out! He will be playing the show together with Blind Boy Paxton, another favorite!

The Dust Busters are an old-time string band based out of Brooklyn, New York. They met while playing in a larger band with folk music legends John Cohen of the New Lost City Ramblers and Peter Stampfel of the Holy Modal Rounders.
